Busselton Iron Man - another great result

The Busselton Iron man was held on Saturday December 5. With an incredible 1232 entrants Busselton must have been bursting at the seams!!

The event comprised: -
3.8 km swim
180 km road bike ride
42 km run

There was a huge range of abilities evident with the fastest (a professional) doing the course in an amazing 8 hours 14 minutes and the slowest competitor to finish in a torturous 16 hours 45 minutes!!

I was out on my usual Saturday morning ride when I got the first of three automated text messages which updated me on my son's progress. Congratulations to David Hind who was 42nd overall. His blistering ride with an average of just under 38kms an hour made him the fastest cyclist in his (25 to 29 year old) age group and earned him 5th place in that category. He was the 14th fastest cyclist overall.

Click here for details of Dave's results

Congratulations also to Michael Rees who came 22 overall.

If you know of others in the Ride_Group or Life Cycle for CanTeen communities who competed in the Iron Man or other events let us know so we can make mention here.

Cyclist wanted for the Busselton Ironman in December

Julie Cammell has been a member of the Ride_Group for quite awhile (although she hasn't ridden with us recently and we miss her!!). Julie has asked us to put the following note on the blog...

I was part of a team to do the Busselton Ironman on December 5th this year but have had to withdraw thanks to some knee problems which require me not to run/ride/swim for a couple of months. I'm looking for a reliable replacement - our team intention is to finish, not to break records so anyone capable of 180km in under the 8 hour time limit is welcome! Having said that our swimmer is very talented and will probably give you a great head start going into the cycle.

We need someone available to come to Busselton on Thursday 3rd December as attendance at registration is compulsory for all team members. The race is on the Saturday. I'm willing to cover the entry fee cost ($200+) and we have a house booked to stay at as well if you are interested in chipping in. Check out http://www.ironmanwa.com/ironmanwa/index.htm for details and let me know ASAP if you are interested - juliecammell@yahoo.com.au We're currently in a mixed category but think we can change to mens if we get a male cyclist.

UPDATE: Julie tells us she now found a cyclist for their team.

Last ride and ....best laid plans

Firstly, Saturday's ride was great, although a little "sharper" than I had originally expected. Before the event, I had visions of an easy cruise around the river. However, with only Robert, myself and a new Terry showing up, the group took on a new dynamic. The pace at which Terry took off, despite his protestations of "I hope I don't slow you down too much" (not likely!!) , made me quickly realise that I had better grab the nearest slipstream and hold on for dear life. So the legs got a sharper-than-expected workout on Saturday morning, but very enjoyable.

And so to the best laid plans...

My intention for Sunday morning was to cruise down the freeway to Berrigan Drive, then cut across North Lake Road etc to Fremantle, checking out the roads for traffic and possible alternative routes, then having a look at La Vespa cafe/patisserie in South Freo as a possible destination of gastronomic replenishment.

It all went wrong when I missed Berrigan Drive. Don't ask me how I missed it but I missed it. I went past the yellow things and knew that Berrigan Drive was coming up soon. I kept riding and started to think "I should have seen it by now", and kept riding and thought "what a fool you would be to turn off too early - that's what you usually do", and kept riding and thought "I'm really getting out of town - I don't remember all this bushland".
I eventually turned off at Rowley Road, realising that I MUST have overshot the target, and decided to navigate my way back to Freo by going generally north and west. So, I find myself in Wattleup (for the first time in my life) bumping along rough roads laid down in the 50s (and neglected ever since) with only a few horses for company. The north/west thing worked OK until a dog-leg forced me a few km back to the east ... directly into a new housing estate (Hammond Park, I think) with curvy roads and roundabouts and ... cul-de-sacs. I retraced my way out of a few cul-de-sacs before I eventually found a road that went vaguely northish and westish.
Then I found out that it's a LONG WAY from Wattleup to Freo, especially when you're a bit knackered from the previous day and an unexpected headwind is making life harder than you want it to be. There are plenty of sharpish inclines on the way - no problem if you're fresh, but I was quickly wilting from the effort.

I made it to Freo. I was not a pretty sight. La Vespa is probably quite nice but it looked more suited to well-dressed people with trendy glasses than sweaty bike riders. I opted for L2 (the usual spot) and re-fuelled on florentine slice, coffee and juice. Bliss!!

I struggled home to South Perth with hollow legs.

A later examination of my errors, on Google Maps, revealed that I went about 10km too far on the cycleway. Multiply that by two and add some extra for diversions and cul-de-sacs, and I can see how that proposed 2-hour ride turned into a 3-hour epic.
We all know that "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" and while it was a close call I'm pretty confident I'll live to ride another day. So, watch out next weekend because I WILL BE FLYING. But more importantly, I'll be ready for a nice social ride of modest difficulty.

See you on Saturday.

Viewing the Avon Descent

If you're viewing the Avon Descent this weekend keep an eye out for two of the Ride_Group members:

Julie Cammell.. Race number 762, paddling a mango coloured surf ski (like about 200 other paddlers!), wearing a light blue helmet, red long sleeve outer layer and a yellow PFD

Glen Dusenberg (Doozy) - Race number 818 wearing a black helmet and in a red Finn Endorfin

By the way I understand PFD is a Personal Flotation Device and NOT a Pleated Fluffy Dress!!

Mark McLaughlan update... temporary visitor restriction

Frans Karel - Owner of Bikeforce, Woodvale and a valued member of the Life Cycle for CanTeen community has given us this update..

I visited Mark at Shenton Park today, while I was there he was moved to a single room for a few days as they have some fears that his wounds could get infected. The specialist indicated that they would like to restrict the visitors for a few days as they will need to wear protective gowns and gloves.

I am no doctor but it was explained that the antibiotics Mark has been on for the last month, reduces the white blood cell count in his system making him vulnerable to infection.

It is only a cautionary step and Mark is getting up and moving around with a walking frame and is still very positive about everything.

Sunday - August 2 - Avon Descent viewing and morning tea

For the first weekend of August we'll shift to a Sunday ride to coincide with the Avon descent. We've got two members of the Ride Group who are participating in the Avon descent this year...Julie Cammell and Glen Dusenberg.

More details to follow...

Saturday July 25 - MTB Ride - Heritage trail

Ride Organiser: Robert Hind Robert@robert-hind.com

Ride style: Social
Ride type: Mountain Bike - non technical
Terrain: Steady Climb then Good descent
Estimated Distance: 45kms
Start Time: 8:30am
Start Point: Peachey Park (Car Park at the top of Morrison Road)

We'll do the easy mountain bike ride on the Heritage Trail. We'll take the track North of Great Eastern Highway up to Sawyers Valley. This a fairly easy, steady climb. Then we'll cross the highway and return on the side with a stop at Darlington for coffee / food. The return is mainly downhill and in parts quite fast.

Mark McLaughlan update...

Hi everyone,

Mark has made enough progress to be shipped out of Royal Perth to Shenton Park annexe where he can focus full time on physio. The doctors and surgeons are happy with the progress of his left leg, infection has cleared up so he's right to go. Yesterday I was lucky enough to be there when the physios got him up, out of bed for the first time to try crutches and then a frame. It was a real effort for Mark but he did really well. He's impatient to get on with it all.

Thanks for all your cards, well wishes, phone calls and visits. It has meant the world to Mark and I. He has also been having regular visits from Life Cycle for CanTeen - the charity cycling group that raise money for teenagers with cancer as well as from staff and members of CanTeen. Mark plans to be back on his bike and able to do next years CanTeen ride again in March- Bassendean to Busselton. Many thanks also to you Frans and mates from the Track for encouragement in this.

He is in Ward 10 if anyone is able to visit, not sure if he has phone in his room. Will check it out today. He still has his mobile phone with him - 0432 259 181.

We're sure its all your prayers and positive thoughts and energy, as well as Mark's general fitness, that has seen such a rapid recovery to date,

love Ains

Organisers mobile tel: 0418 936 852
Ride style: Social
Ride type: Road
Terrain: Mainly flat
Estimated Distance: 70kms
Start Time: 8:30am (Maylands)

Start from Maylands Railway Station at 8:30am. Make our way to Fenton Rd in Kewdale via Garrett Rd and Abernethy Road. Traffic should be light before 9am. Pick up the route of the Roe Highway loop and get onto the Roe Hwy cycleway. Turn off the Roe Hwy cycleway at Willeri Drive and follow a route through Willeton and Bullcreek. Scanned map attached. This is the mystery part because I've never ridden through here.
It should be easy to follow because it is Cycle Route SW7. Link up with the Riverton Road route that we did once about 6 months ago.
Once over the Riverton Bridge, up to Manning Road then past Curtin Uni to South Perth. Coffee/food stop at Globe Cafe in Angelo St, South Perth. Take the usual route along cycleways from South Perth back to Maylands. People can peel off homewards as we go, or disperse from South Perth as they wish. I'll complete the loop back to Maylands.

Mutual inspiration

I took the opportunity to visit Mark McLaughlan in Royal Perth Hospital (Ward 7B) last Friday. He has been there since being hit by a 4WD while riding his bike to work on June 11.

Despite spending the first two weeks of his time in hospital unable to move he is cheerful and very positive after operations to his leg and pelvis. He has been very buoyed by visitors including those from the Life Cycle community and at least one member of CanTeen. While Mark is very appreciative of the welcome encouragement if you take the time to visit him you'll also end up inspired by him.

Mark has already set himself a goal of riding in next year's Life Cycle and we've assured him of a place.

Member of Life Cycle community hit by car!

Mark McLaughlan joined us for Life Cycle for CanTeen 2009.
Mark is fairly quiet, but you'll probably remember him as the living artwork (heavily tattood) who rode a recumbant bike.

Mark has had his fair share of hard times over the years and spent some time very close to "rock bottom" in Kings Cross, Sydney but he recently celebrated 17 years away from that side of life.

Mark is a good friend of long time Life Cycle supporter, Frans Karel (owner of Bikeforce - Woodvale) and Frans tells us that Mark raved about doing Life Cycle.

Mark's past life has left him with a legacy of poor health issues that prevent him driving and he usually relies on his mountain bike as his form of transport. On Thursday June 11 he was heading to work when at 6:40am he was hit by a 4WD whose driver didn't see him. Incidentally, before we get angry at the 4WD owner he has been devasted by the injuries he has caused Mark and is doing everything he can to help him.

See this link http://wanneroo.inmycommunity.com.au/news-and-views/local-news/Cyclist-injured-in-accident/7528115/

Mark is (at the time of writing) in Royal Perth hospital - Ward 7A and has been overwhelmed and inspired by the number of unexpected visitors he has had. His injuries included a shattered pelvis, left leg and collarbone. At one stage it looked like he might lose a leg. Mark still has a long way to go with his recovery but he has already set himself a goal of getting well enough to ride in next year's Life Cycle for CanTeen!!

If you've got a chance to drop into RPH and see Mark let him know you're a member of the Life Cycle for CanTeen community. We know that Mark and his fiance, Ainslee will really appreciate the support.

Nomination forms are now available on the website
http://www.lifecyclewa.com/ but please don't send money before July 1.

As usual there is a limit on the number of riders. Fully paid nominations secure a place. We expect to reach our limit fairly quickly especially since the date has been set early and over 70% of the 2009 riders had participated in Life Cycle for CanTeen on previous rides.

A cautionary note for early morning riders!!

If you take to the roads and bike paths early in the morning you may be startled by bright lights coming towards you.

You could easily reach the conclusion that a plane has mistaken the bike path for a runway and is hurtling towards you OR that some young country lad is out "spotting" for roos Or that the train has come off the tracks.

Well you would (fortunately) be wrong!! ...but I do now have my new Ay Up lights fitted to my road bike!! Be prepared to be dazzled. They're great - I recommend them.

The best lights? ...any advice?

I usually ride early in the morning (3:45 or 4:15 start) so most of my riding is in the dark (2.5 to 3 hours per ride).

The routes I take (roads and bike paths) are relatively consistent and some parts of them are quite well lit ..... others sections are very dark and I've had a couple of spills primarily due to not being able to see debris on the path until too late.

As a result of my latest spill (three of us hit a tree that fell across the path) I've decided to invest in a good set of lights. One friend has recommended the "Ayup" range (an Australian brand)
http://www.ayup.com.au and they certainly look good according to their web site.

Would others like to share their experiences with lights?

Getting to be a (BAD) habit....

Well it has happened again!! The bike is temporarily out of action following a collision early on Monday morning!!

I was out doing one of my usual rides with a couple of work colleagues. From early on in the ride we experienced debris at different points. Our progress past the Burswood gold course just after 5:00am was slowed by sand and weed across the path.

When we got to Roe Highway bike path (near Orrong Road) small branches were strewn across the path on certain stretches. Some sections of the path were well lit but intermittent sections were quite dark. It was on one of those dark sections that a tree lay across the path ..but we didn't see it. We rode one behind the other. I was at the back. Typically I backed off in the darker sections where I struggled to see and then caught up in the lighter or straighter sections. I had just caught up when we all three came down. Andrew was at the front and he came down hardest hitting the tree with his front wheel then straight over the handle bars to hit hard with his face copping the worst of it. Jason hit next and then I tailed the two of them.

Jason and I suffered grazes and bruising. Andrew has 10 stitches in his top lip. Andrew's bike was also worst effected. I've got mine booked in for a check and repairs on Thursday but the seat broke and will need replacing.

We'll definitely be adding more powerful lights to our shopping list!!

Sat hilly ride details on blog

Ride organiser: Terry: mailto:tpdhome@git.com.au
Mob: 0414 730 970
Time: 8:30 a.m.
Location: Corner Scott St and Great Eastern Highway, Koongamia

This week's ride is a hilly ride starting at 8:30a.m. from the corner of Scott St and Great Eastern Hway, Koongamia.
We'll take the back streets to Mundaring via a series of fairly short hills, then cycle past the weir to Kalamunda. (That'll make us all weird.) The hill on the Kalamunda side of the weir and the last few km into Kalamunda are the big challenges of the ride.
Morning tea will be at Paris Brest -- for which we have buy-one-get-one-free vouchers. (I won't talk about the Brest's passion for pairs.)
We'll head back to the start via Gooseberry Hill and the zig-zags.

Hope to see you there,
Terry

WINTER TRACK CYCLING GRAND PRIX - June 28, 2009

The Winter Track Cycling Grand Prix is being held June 28 at the Midvale Velodrome (see the attached brochure)

Andrea and I have already booked a table for 8 and have 3 (paid) spaces available if any one in the Ride Group is interested.

Of course, if you want to get together a table yourself you're welcome (but I note reservations are required by May 23).

Tour de France evening

Andrea and I are planning a "Tour de France" evening at our place and members of the Ride Group will be welcome to join us.

We're yet to sort out the details but it is likely to be for one of the later mountain stages during this year's tour.

It will be a "bring a plate" and BYO drink / wine type social evening. We'll provide the tv and venue.

We'll need an idea of how many people are coming.

Watch this space for further details.

Cheers
Robert and Andrea

This weekend's ride (May 16)

Any suggestions for this weekend's (or next) weekend's ride?

Headsweats - no sweat

I've been using "Headsweats" bandannas for quite some time now and swear by them.

I'm a "hot blooded male" who tends to sweat a lot and I used to have a soaking, stinking, helmet and sweat running down my face and stinging my eyes... but not since I've been using "Headsweats" bandannas.

http://www.everestsports.com.au/headsweats/

Do they stop you sweating? No ...but the wetness is "wicked" away. Yes the bandanna itself gets wet .. but soon dries out.

I recommend them.

Welcome to the new Ride_Group blog

Welcome to the new Ride_Group Blog!!

Q. Why a new blog?
A. In the past the Ride_Group blog could only be added to or edited by me. I've decided to "Open it up" so that other members (and only other invited members) can add their own new blog items or comment on existing blog entries.

Q. I'm so used to finding entries on the old blog. How will I find the new blog?
A. Firstly ...... I will leave the old blog in place for a while with a link to the new one.
Secondly...The address for this new blog is easier to remember.

Q. Can I add new blog entries or comment on an existing blog entry?
A. Yes. If you're a member of the Ride_Group and you've been invited to. That is the whole point of this new blog!!
